Religious Doctrine Whom Do You Follow?

BRAD: In this ever changing landscape of religious values, there is a  lot of room for interpretations of the bible.

How many versions are there and which one do you believe you should follow with the  most accurate translation?

We can start with the Old Testament, work our way into the New Testament, New International Version, King James Version, and a few more versions such as the New American Bible.

The other i would like to call break off religions, such as the Jehovah Witness also have their very own New World Translation version of the Bible.

As a matter of fact, in 1913 Baptist minister Rev. Ross of the James Street Baptist Church of Hamilton accused Watchtower founder Charles Taze Russell of preaching destructive doctrines which he did not have the credentials as a theologian or a scholar to preach to the newly formed Jehovah Witness.

Whether it is Scientology, the Raelian movement whom believe that soon we will be visited by entities from another galaxy, the Mormons, to just name a few, people succumb to the doctrine preached by the head of their chosen religious movement.

With religion recently getting a bad name and people not flocking to churches like they once did, as well as churches going up on the auction block, no wonder people are losing their religious values!

We must retain our core values  in not only religion, but in humanity as well and not let ourselves drown in the quicksand of deceit, lies and propaganda!

The way i look at it, the leaders of tomorrow and not coming from today, and it can be seen all around us.

With lack of communication, and no personal contact with people other than smartphones and texting, the youth of today somehow to me, are not going to lead us into the future.

Without personal contact and the ability to act independently, as well as no prior interest on what the country of Canada was based on, we are in a quagmire with our youth.

With so much violence in the media and bombarded by pics and news of Justin Beiber, John Travolta, Brad Pitt and so on, are people really interested in religion?

Somehow the leaders of Christianity have to develop a plan to get the masses back into the pews, and for people to start donating a small piece to the resurrection of religion once again!

RAY: Man was made with a God given void that he must fill. Pascal is the originator of that idea and I think he is right. Man looks for a religion to follow. God provides one that leads to eternal life. Man tends toward a religion that will lead to eternal regret according to the prophet Daniel. Technically according to the Bible everyone will exist forever but the quality of existance is described as one of either eternal life or eternal regret.

Daniel 12 - 2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall
awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. (KJV)

Man is so religious that even in the attempt to deny the religion that God has laid out he makes a religion out of science when he puts his trust in Evolution and its closely related Secular Humanism beliefs. Even the  modern belief in Psychology as offering answers is a religion that people follow. Atheists are also fighting to be recognized as a religion and they evangelize aggressively. And all the various cults such as Islam, Russelism, Mormanism, Scientology are all attempts to form a religion which is in oposition to the faith that God reveals about Himself which will lead to the everlasting life spoken of by the Prophet Daniel.

You raise a good point that there are many versions of the English Bible to choose from. There are actually over 160 English versions to choose from currently. However there is no point in discussing which Bible you should read if you don’t think you should read any version. That is where many people are at today.  In our upcomming program we should discuss why we should read the Bible in the first place and why it is a book that is true. What makes it different from every other book? I hope that we will in future programs also start to examine the quesiton of which version of the English Bible should be avoided and which ones are the ones you should be using.

I would like to encourage our readers to speak up and let us know what they are thinking.  Please post your comments on this post as to what kinds of topics you would like to see us cover related to our theme of “Truth is what matters”.

Is the Christian Bible a source of absolute truth?

RAY: I wish to thank one of our readers for raising the very important question of why I would think that an archaic writing (the Christian Bible) is a source of truth? He felt that quoting from it does not prove anything about the topic of “Absolute Truth”.

I realize that this is a valid argument that has been raised which is worthy of addressing.

I tackled this question in the introduction pages of the SKJV (Simplified King James Version) Bible which we promote at our sister website I also addressed this topic in a more detailed manner in the introduction to another book that I authored called “Illumination or Illusion – A comparative Study of Newer Bible Versions”. Both of these books are available at

I have provided here a link to the web page for the SKJV – Gospel of John. On page viii of the introduction  there is a section entitled “The Holy Bible is God’s way of revealing Himself to us !“. Please read that article and keep the gospel of John as well to read at your leisure.

We will attempt to discuss this topic in a coming show. In preparation for this show I would like to ask for your opinions. Please comment about what you think about this topic.

Without Jesus there is no absolute truth

RAY: At this website we hope to directly engage folks regarding things in which worldviews collide. Jesus said

“I am the way the truth and the life”. (John 14.6, SKJV)

Truth seems to be part of the invitation appeal being made by Jesus. It is said of Christ by the Apostle Paul that

“God our saviour desires that all men might be saved and to come to the
knowledge of the truth”. (1 Tim 2.3-4, SKJV)

It makes sense to us that the world in general is leaning toward the idea that there is no absolute truth because for the most part the world is becoming increasingly affected by the false philosophy of Secular Humanism. The secular humanist cannot be confident in his ability to know the truth because truth does not exist without a knowledge of God and the world is increasingly rejecting the God of creation, our Lord Jesus Christ.

“In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God,
and all things that are made were made by Him. ... The Word became flesh
and dwelt among us.” (John 1.1-3,14, SKJV - available at

Secular Humanism has taught today’s generation that Evolution is responsible for creation not Jesus. It has taught that there is no absolute truth because it is teaching there is no God. If God is truth which Jesus claimed He is then there is no truth if there is no Jesus in a persons life. At least for the person lacking the experience of Jesus there is no truth.

Fallacies of Evolution: A Series of Three Lectures
Evolution is not accepted by all scientists and much less by all scholars; it is admittedly an unproven theory; it is by its own principles unscientific, unphilosophical, unchristian, and simply a rehash of the old teachings of chance garbed in scientific terms. No single case, in the theoretical and popular use of the term, has ever been shown, and there is no known cause which actuates it. …. it is flatly in opposition to the teachings of the Bible and destructive of all Christian faith; that it had its beginnings in heathenism and takes its ending in atheism. … The craze of the last half century is little more than a recrudescence of a philosophy which has divided the opinion of men from the earliest ages. In both Egyptian and East India mythology, the world and all things in it were evolved from an egg; and so in the Polynesian myths. … “Dr. Etheridge, of the British Museum, one of England’s most famous experts in fossilology, has passed the following criticism upon evolution: ‘In all this great museum there is not a particle of evidence of transmutation of species. Nine-tenths of the talk of evolutionists is sheer nonsense, not founded on observation and wholly unsupported by fact. This museum is full of proofs of the utter falsity of their views.’ ”

What the Bible says about man’s deception and God’s desire that we know the truth
2 Thes. 2 – . 3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there first comes the Apostasy [falling away], … 9 … according to the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 and with all deception of unrighteousness in those who perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this reason God shall send them a strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12 that they all might be judged [damned] who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. (SKJV)

1 Tim. 6 – 20 … keep that which is committed to your(s) trust, avoiding dishonourable and vain babblings, and oppositions of science (knowledge) falsely so called: 21 which some asserting have erred concerning the faith. (SKJV)

Nik Wallenda an inspiration to everyone!

BRAD: Recently this past week after watching Nik Wallenda basically waltz across the tightrope in Niagara Falls from the American side and ending up in Canada, a thought immediately entered my mind.

What an inspiration this man is, not only to the people watching worldwide but to the world as well!

When the walk began in the evening Wallenda seemed brimming with confidence and determination but the journey was not without its tense moments.

About half way through the walk, the tightrope became drenched with the mist from the falls and Mr. Wallenda turned at that point to divine guidance to help him through this treacherous part of the journey.

Over the airwaves, Mr. Wallenda was praying to Jesus Christ to help him through this part of the journey and his plea was heard worldwide over the television and radio.

His prayers were answered, as he approached the end of his journey to the waiting arms of family and friends.

In this so called new age of enlightenment, and so called religions as Scientology whom certain people refer to as a cult, where do they turn to for divine guidance?

Lets talk about Scientology for a bit shall we, considering it was the brainstorm of Ron Hubbard whom at the time was a science fiction writer and friends of Jack Parsons, who was into the occult.

Jack Parsons was a devoted follower of Aleister Crowley who was a ceremonial magician and then Ron Hubbard became sexually involved with Jack Parsons 21 yr old girlfriend.

In his earlier life Ron Hubbard served in the Marine Reserves, but was removed because he was unsuitable for command.

Ron Hubbard also was implicated as a conspirator in a government theft of documents of the Internal Revenue Service.

All of this stress was too much for Hubbard and died in Creston California in 1986.

The Scientology movement remains strong to this day ,with such notables as Tom Cruise and John Travolta leading the pack of Hollywood wannabees who are looking for something or anyone to follow without doing much research into what they are getting into.

I would like to know who they pray to in a moment of divine guidance when they are walking the tightrope of life!

Famous Quotes

RAY: I was wondering what famous sayings have been made about what really matters in this life, so I checked a website called “Brainy Quote”. There were too many sayings to list them all but a few of the quotes were quite interesting. Here are a few quotes that I thought I’d pass along.

“Anyone who doesn’t take truth seriously in small matters cannot be trusted in large ones either. …In matters of truth and justice, there is no difference between large and small problems, for issues concerning the treatment of people are all the same. …Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters.” – Albert Einstein

“In matters of conscience, the law of the majority has no place.” – Mahatma Gandhi

“It is not living that matters, but living rightly.” – Socrates

“It is dangerous to be right in matters on which the established authorities are wrong.” – Voltaire

“To confine our attention to terrestrial matters would be to limit the human spirit.” – Stephen Hawking

“Those who want the Government to regulate matters of the mind and spirit are like men who are so afraid of being murdered that they commit suicide to avoid assassination.” – Harry S. Truman

“It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.” – Epictetus

“It is not truth that matters, but victory” and: “Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it” – Adolf Hitler

The Bible in teaches that our eternal destiny is what really matters.

“What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world but looses his soul?” – Jesus

“God our saviour desires that all men might be saved and come to a knowledge of truth”. – Apostle Paul

The following video challenges our generation to Focus on what matters.

Evolution and Secular Thinking

RAY: For this week’s show we had Dr. Harold McCarthy joined us for an invigorating conversation which touched on the Ontario provincial government Dalton McGuinty’s non-constitutional opinion that he is Supreme and not the Roman Catholic church regarding what is taught in the Catholic School Boards of Ontario. We also discussed how the widespread common belief in Evolution drives secular thinking today. We are going to have Harold back next week so that we can continue this most interesting conversation that we started with him.

Creationism vs Evolution you be the judge!

BRAD: According to this article 4 out of 10 Americans believe in creationism but is lower than in previous years, hinting that maybe people’s views are changing like the political landscape.

If you’re in a room of 100 people, odds are likely about 40 think God created humans about 10,000 years ago, part of a philosophy called creationism, according to a Gallup poll reported Friday (Dec. 17). That number is slightly lower than in years past and down from a high of 47 percent in both 1993 and 1999.

And 38 percent of Americans, the poll estimates, believe God guided the process that brought humans from “cavemen” to today’s incarnation over millions of years, while 16 percent think humans evolved over millions of years, without any divine intervention.

This secular view, while a relatively small number, is up from 9 percent in 1982, according to Gallup.

Like most American attitudes, Gallup wrote, views on human origins have political consequences. For instance, debates and clashes over which explanations for human origins should be included in school textbooks have persisted for decades. And with 40 percent of Americans continuing to hold to an anti-evolutionary belief about the origin of humans, it is highly likely that these types of debates will continue, according to Gallup.

The findings also stand in stark contrast to another announcement Friday, this one by John Holdren, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The memo was issued to federal science agencies to guide them in making rules to ensure scientific integrity.

The Gallup results are based on telephone interviews conducted Dec. 10-12 with a random sample of 1,019 adults, ages 18 and older, living in the continental United States. The findings were weighted by gender, age, race, education, religion and phone lines to make the sample nationally representative.

Americans’ views on human origins varied significantly by level of education and religion, the poll found. Those with less education were more likely to hold a creationist view that God created life thousands of years ago, while college graduates were more likely to hold one of the two viewpoints involving evolution.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Americans who attend church frequently were most likely to accept explanations for the origin of humans that involve God. Still, the creationist viewpoint, which was held by 60 percent of weekly churchgoers, wasn’t universal even among the most highly religious group. Also, about a fourth of those who seldom or never attend church choose the creationist view.

A significantly higher percentage of Republicans indicated a creationist view of human origins, which Gallup experts say reflects in part the strong relationship between religion and politics in contemporary America. Republicans are also significantly more likely to attend church weekly than are others. Democrats and Independents showed similar views on human origins:

  • Republicans: 36 percent think humans evolved through a God-guided process; 8 percent say God had no part in the process; and 52 percent held the creationist view.
  • Democrats: 40 percent agree with evolution through a God-guided process; 20 percent say God had no part in the process; and 34 percent held the creationist view.
  • Independents: 39 percent agree with evolution through a God-guided process; 21 percent say God had no part in the process; and 34 percent held the creationist view.

Gallup officials wrote that it’s not surprising some 80 percent of Americans hold a view of human origins that involves God, since most Americans believe in God and about 85 percent identify with a religion.

RAY: I was the director of an organization which concerned itself primarily with the debate between Secular Humanism and the Christian Worldview called “International Christian Crusade”. We saw as our primary goal as an organiztion (predating my involvement) the need to counter the belief of Secular Humanists in Evolution. We had a book we published that I hope to make available later on as downloadable .pdf called Evolution – Science Falsely so called”. Joining me on the board of that organization was “Dr. Harold McCarthy” who was also the past president of another organization called “Christian Science” which also was engaged agressively in the debate between Evolution and Creation. Harold also incidentally is a retired Professor and Dean of Humanities from Canada Christian College. Additionally Harold is one of the main scrutinizers of my written publications and especially in the translation work for the Simplified King James Bible that we make available at the sister website. I would like to have him join us for one of our shows so that we can have a good discussion on this topic of Evolution verses Creation. Brad let me know when I should invite him to join us on the show.
I made an invitiation to join this website at the website. I said a little more about the subject of creation and truth there that might be of interest to our readers

Church and State when is it Separated or is it?

BRAD: Recently the provincial government in Ontario issued a stern warning to the Catholic Church that they are in fact the higher power when it comes to running Ontario schools!

Premier Dalton McGuinty stated they have a different set of responsibilities during a recent visit to a Canadian manufacturing company.

McGuinty claims that they  are accountable to all faiths, accountable to people with no faith, and accountable to parents, and basically it seems to me from this statement of arrogance that they are the higher power!

McGuinty’s wife by the way, is a separate school teacher which in fact receives 7 billion annually in taxpayer funding, doesn’t say which separate school she teaches, but probably i can bet not a Catholic school teacher after that comment!

We all know what happens when politics and religion clash, and lets wait and see the outcome of such an arrogant and righteous comment made by the Liberal party and premier McGuinty!

RAY: What you have here is a clash between the Secular Humanist World View which represents the majority of Canadians Viewpoint as expressed by who we elect as our government officials and the Christian WorldView. The sad thing is these matters are seldom identified correctly for what they are. There is a religious battle going on between people who do not believe in Absolute truth, therefore by definition they do not believe there is a God and people who do believe in Absolute truth, namely the Christians and those that are persuaded toward the Judeao Christian Worldview of morality. Morality without God is Amorality. What we have here is Amorality being forced on those that wish to live their lives by God’s Moral code of ethics. In fact Amorality leads to immorality because an Amoral person does not believe that what is right and wrong is defined by a Sovereign power that is above his governments authority. So he lowers his expectations of what he wants society to be by making the state sovereign instead and accepting the states rule over him. This was actually the goal in ancient times when monarchs stated that they represented God to the masses and actually in many cases expected to be revered as God themselves.

The historical bible account of the prophet Daniel spending time in the Lions Den is a reminder of what it may take for a Jew and by extension a Christian to obey God’s wishes in defiance of the rule of the state. Throughout history there have been many godly and righteous martyrs who followed the footsteps of the prophets faithfully willing to lay down their lives in refusal to honor the state rule above the rule of God. There are martyrs in the middle eastern and eastern countries that have been forced into similar sacrifice in the year 2012. (I am not referring to Muslim murderers who have taken over the word martyr and turned it into a word that for them justifies murder. I am talking about true martyrs who for no fault of their own other than their beliefs that are in opposition with a State authority, it has cost them their lives.) We in North America seem so far spared of this level of committment. However we must never forget, those of us who are followers of Christ what it means to follow Him. He said “Pick up your cross and follow me.”. Eleven of His disciples that he said that to were martyred for taking His instruction seriously. The state hated Christians after Jesus ascended to heaven calling them “Atheists” for believing in only one God and calling them “the cult of the resurrection” for testifying to the fact that five hundred eyewitnesses met with Jesus and felt his wounds and ate with Him after his burial and resurrection. Many of them were martyred for not recanting what they had seen and heard.

Today Christians must continue to stand their ground. Shame on most of us. I include myself. Because if I know that Abortion is a Secular Humanist Religions worldview that counters a WorldView that includes God as supreme over the state. And if I know that the state is in opposition to the God who I am willing to carry my own cross for, then why am I not out picketing in front of our hospitals that are state run and are murdering the unborn Children of our Country? Is it to protect myself so that no harm will come to me by the state? Is it apathy? The biggest question I fear is “Will I be held accountable before the Lord Jesus Christ when I am judged for what I did here on earth if I never spoke out about the injustices that the Secular Humanist State force upon the citizenry? Jesus said that Christians are to be the salt of the earth and warned them about losing their saltines. They do not have to be the majority but if they know “Absolute Truth” in a society that doesn’t know Truth then they must speak out and as a little salt can preserve meat. So too a little preservation by Christians can preserve our society, making it a safer and better place for future generations. Paul said of Jesus. And we must not forget this. “God our saviour desires that all men might be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth”. Ultimately the salvation experience of being born again from above by the willingness of God in the person of the Holy Spirit to dwell in us, makes us God’s representatives here on earth. His ambassadors. His messengers of Truth to a world that is in need of our Lord and Saviour who defined himself as being truth. “I am the way the truth and the life”.

I hope my reader can appreciate my passion as I delved into giving a pep-talk to Christians and a Sermon to all in this response.

Some comments about Truth from other websites.

RAY: None of the following articles are my own. I thought I’d share what some other blogs are saying about “Truth”.

What is truth and does it matter? –  (

A recent Barna Research Group survey on what Americans believe asked the question, “Is there absolute Truth?” Sixty-six percent of adults responded that they believe that “there is no such thing as absolute truth; different people can define truth in conflicting ways and still be correct.” Seventy-two percent of those aged 18 to 25 expressed this belief.

In a recent series of more than twenty interviews conducted at random at a large university, people were asked if there was such a thing as absolute truth – truth that is true across all times and cultures for all people. All but one respondent answered along these lines: “Truth is whatever you believe.”, “There is no absolute truth.”, “If there were such a thing as absolute truth, how could we know what it is?”, “People who believe in absolute truth are dangerous.” The lone exception was an evangelical Christian, who said absolute truth was in Jesus Christ.

I suggest that the situation that these surveys reveal is fairly typical of the Western World. As Clive Calver says, in an article ‘Thinking Clearly About Truth’ in Christianity, we “drift on a tide of uncertainty into a sea of unknowing.”

Why Truth Matters  –  (Os Guiness as quoted by Ravi Zacharius –

At first sight, the biblical view of truth is obscene to modern minds. But on a deeper look, the biblical view is profound, timely, and urgent for today, even for those who reject it.

The following is a plenary session delivered by Os Guinness at Lausanne 2010 in Cape Town, South Africa ( Used by permission of the author.

In this extraordinary moment in human history, why is it that truth matters? There are times when history and the gospel of Jesus converge and create a great thrust forward in human history. So it was with the “gifts” of the gospel, such as the rise of philanthropy, of the reform movements, or the creation of the universities, or modern science. There are other times when history and the gospel collide and the titanic struggle shapes history in a different but equally decisive way. So it was when the Lordship of Christ triumphed over the might of imperial Rome. But there are still other times when history and the gospel appear to collide but, in fact, the gospel speaks to the deepest dilemmas and the highest aspirations of the age, even to those which oppose it. So it is today with the concept of truth.

At first sight, the biblical view of truth is obscene to modern minds. It’s arrogant, it’s exclusive, it’s intolerant, it’s divisive, it’s judgmental, and it’s reactionary. But on a deeper look, the biblical view is profound, timely, and urgent for today, even for those who reject it. But obviously regardless of what the world thinks, we follow the one who is the way, the truth, and the life. We therefore worship and serve the God of truth, whose Word is truth, and who Himself is true and may be trusted because of his covenant faithfulness.

Truth – Not Sides – Is What Matters in Journalism

August 25, 2009 by George Snell (not Brad Snell, not related) Comments

When I was a newspaper reporter, I heard the expression dozens of times a week:

If only more journalists and bloggers were as diligent as Tintin.

“There are two sides to every story.”

I heard it from sources. I heard it from editors (especially from editors). I heard it from fellow reporters. Hell, I probably muttered those words a hundred times myself. Probably as my lame excuse why I was giving equal weight to a contrarian and probably dubious point of view.

Because there are NOT two sides to every story. There never have been. Sometimes there is one side to story. Other times there are three or four and sometimes even dozens sides. The notion that there are two distinct and equally relevant sides to every issue is ridiculous. But that mentality continues to permeate journalism and the web – especially blogging.

It’s one of the reason why journalism is struggling. As mainstream publications cutback on reporting staff and put more pressure on remaining journalists to produce copy – more he said/she said stories are published. Why? Because they are easy to write. Here is how NYU Journalism Professor Jay Rosen of ThinkPress describes the fundamental features of a he said/she said story:
•“There’s a public dispute.
•The dispute makes news.
•No real attempt is made to assess clashing truth claims in the story, even though they are in some sense the reason for the story. (Under the “conflict makes news” test.)
•The means for assessment do exist, so it’s possible to exert a factual check on some of the claims, but for whatever reason the report declines to make use of them.
•The symmetry of two sides making opposite claims puts the reporter in the middle between polarized extremes.”

This two sides to every story – he said/she said dynamic have produced coverage of:
•“Death panels” for the elderly as part of Obama’s healthcare reform package even though no such thing exists
•Holocaust deniers claiming that one of history’s most tragic events never even occurred
•The birthers movement who are claiming Obama isn’t an American citizen and should be removed from office

Now granted some of the coverage on the examples above is simply propoganda – the spreading of lies even when you know they’re lies. But many mainstream publications and blogs have reported on the issues above giving equal voice to the people who promote these fictional point of views. There is no “other” side of whether or not the Holocaust happened. To even give a voice to Holocaust deniers in a serious news article is to do a disservice to readers – and to society.

But this is what happens in a polarized political environment divided between Democrats and Republicans. The idea gets pushed that there are two sides – and only two sides – to every issue (as if every Democrat and Republican thinks exactly the same and that nuance doesn’t exist).

The job of a journalist should be simple: Discover the truth. Explore all the angles if necessary – giving a voice to dissenters with an opinion based on facts and reason. This could be one side, two sides or many sides. But at the end of the day reporters – those working for newspapers and those working for blogs – need to provide readers with what is real.
